Memorial Day is when we celebrate fallen soldiers who perished serving our country while recognizing veterans and those who are still serving. What better way to honor those who are protecting our homes and freedom than by doing some around-the-house projects during this holiday weekend. Most of us have three days at our disposal and while many of us choose to travel, with traffic and the rising cost of gas perhaps this time and money are both better spent at home. So here's our list of the five best projects to perform during our time off:
1. Out Of The Gutter
Late May is the perfect time of year to tackle the task of cleaning gutters since the debris should be dry and easier to remove. While performing this annual ritual, take notice of the wear-and-tear of these exterior guardians as it might be time for an update. Even if they don't need replacement, for those who are still performing this yearly chore, it might be time to look at
gutter guards, screens and other devices that will either eliminate or greatly reduce the regular occurrence of this task.
2. Paint More (or less)
Again, this is the optimum time to take on painting projects both indoors and out. If your exterior is looking dreary, it might be time to look at siding instead. Just like gutter guards, more weather and eco-friendly options will save both time and money in the long run. On the interior, if you don't need a complete do-over on your walls, perhaps a more trendy, decorative spruce-up is in order. With a bit of tape, a few smaller, less-expensive quarts of paint, an otherwise drab trim will highlight a whole new look. If everything around you is Eggshell White, why not check out some
more trendy colors to brighten these otherwise drab spaces.
3. Get Out Of The Closet
If you're spending entirely too much time getting ready, choosing an outfit or just struggle to find things in this space, it's probably time to clean and clear out some closet space. Similar to our other recommendations, to lessen the frequency and difficulty of this annual chore, consider a
closet organizer kit. With better, more efficient shelving, some with drawers and other gadgets, you'll be cleaning and clearing out space in her less often.
4. Caulk It Up To Better Insulation
Over the course of time, caulking around doors and windows tends to crack, peel and become less effective at performing its primary function. The same can be true for this material in our bathrooms and some kitchens. Take the time to purchase some inexpensive caulking, make the rounds around your house, remove and apply as needed. Not only will you be more comfortable with better insulation, but it will also save on heating and cooling costs. In the kitchen and bathroom, better caulk will reduce the risk of pricey plumbing problems with leaks, mold or mildew.
5. Screen Doors And More
After a long hard winter or following many seasons, after the arrival of Spring and with Summer quickly approaching, often our window screens and doors have taken a real beating. Since this is the time of year when we tend to open up the house for some much needed fresh air, it might be time to take a look at replacing these ventilation-assisting devices.
According to the EPA, better ventilation will help to reduce the possibility of nasty mold build-up in our homes and goes a long way in preventing dust mites and cockroaches from taking up residence. These are just a few reasons why having better, more sturdy screens will save money in the long run and offer us a healthier lifestyle. Today's consumers should be looking at a number of different options available to them including the
benefits of installing a retractable screen door. Be sure to
